Spoiler alert, not all things that have to do with success are racist. Have you ever considered that gifted kids aren't typically valedictorians, or did you even know that? Those most elite students are actually the ones who have to be the hungriest for that top spot so they worked the hardest. Does that make it biased or is there a possibility these people work for it hard than most? I mean, most successful asian comedians opening lineup is all about their tyrannical 'tiger-mom' who always reminds them that their cousin is way better than them because their on track to be a doctor or something. How is that racist? Are you saying that minority groups are dumb? Also your wrong about who the gifted program if filled with. Simply a fast track to get them thru their required education sooner. It's a program for any student (read, 'individual') who has the capacity to take on a more challenging education, do. Your logic about what the gifted program is all about is way off. But they're politicians after all.I will watch closely. That's the problem that a lot of politicians in New York City are trying to address. So when it's time to talk about gifted and talented programs and selective high schools oh, there's already so much stacked against them. Students in largely black and Latino communities do not receive the same quality education as students in largely white and Asian communities. New York City is actually quite segregated in some ways. I'm just delivering this particular message to you.įrankly, I think racism is pervasive throughout the entire school system from kindergarten on. How that factors into your comment, I'm not sure. Particularly because it's important to me as a parent of a gifted 11 year old in NYC schools, but I just wanted you to understand that in the country's largest school system it's not just white kids who are given an easier path for advancement. It's too late in the evening for me to have a discussion about this. In what can be considered the "crown jewel" of New York City's selective high school program, Stuyvesant High School, a whopping 68% of the students are Asian. Typically a little over 50% of the students are Asian, with the number of white students being a very close second. There is a greater amount of Asian students in both programs. Just for the record, in NYC schools, gifted and talented programs and selective high schools are not filled with "white people of Northern European ancestry.
