![]() ![]() He let his glory be seen, and his disciples believed in him. This was the first of the signs given by Jesus: it was given at Cana in Galilee. Having no idea where it came from – only the servants who had drawn the water knew – the steward called the bridegroom and said, ‘People generally serve the best wine first, and keep the cheaper sort till the guests have had plenty to drink but you have kept the best wine till now’.ġ0. They did this the steward tasted the water, and it had turned into wine.ĩ. ‘Draw some out now’ he told them ‘and take it to the steward.’Ĩ. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’, and they filled them to the brim.ħ. There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons.Ħ. His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you’.ĥ. Jesus said, ‘Woman, why turn to me? My hour has not come yet.’Ĥ. When they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the wedding was all finished, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine”.ģ. Oh, my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell and lead all souls to heaven especially those who are in most need of thy mercy. And a voice spoke from heaven, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved my favour rests on him’. As soon as Jesus was baptised he came up from the water, and suddenly the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. ![]() ![]() ‘It is I who need baptism from you’ he said ‘and yet you come to me!’ But Jesus replied, ‘Leave it like this for the time being it is fitting that we should, in this way, do all that righteousness demands’. Then Jesus appeared: he came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. His winnowing-fan is in his hand he will clear his threshing-floor and gather his wheat into the barn but the chaff he will burn in a fire that will never go out.’ĩ. I baptise you in water for repentance, but the one who follows me is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to carry his sandals he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.Ĩ. Even now the axe is laid to the roots of the trees, so that any tree which fails to produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown on the fire.ħ. But if you are repentant, produce the appropriate fruit, and do not presume to tell yourselves, “We have Abraham for our father”, because, I tell you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones. But when he saw a number of Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism he said to them, ‘Brood of vipers, who warned you to fly from the retribution that is coming?Ħ. Then Jerusalem and all Judaea and the whole Jordan district made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him in the river Jordan they confessed their sins.ĥ. This man John wore a garment made of camel-hair with a leather belt round his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.Ĥ. This was the man the prophet Isaiah spoke of when he said: A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.ģ. In due course John the Baptist appeared he preached in the wilderness of Judaea and this was his message: ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand’.Ģ.
